Beach profiling and ghost crab densities on a hawksbill turtle nesting beach in the Seychelles

چکیده
Increasing beach sediment loss from erosion and high levels of crab Ocypode spp. predation are threatening turtle nests nesting habitat. The 900 m long on Cousine Island, Seychelles, supports a population approximately 70–130 hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata each season. Seasonal storm-related accretion cycles Island have the potential destroying 50% or more all egg clutches island in single Observed rates had reached 90–100% preferred zones previous years. This has resulted intensive management measures to minimise nest losses. We investigated distribution density ghost crabs morphology across different area turtle-nesting season during 2014–2015. Crab burrow numbers varied between zone areas were highest backshore. correlated negatively with available area, we found that increased presence nests. Conservation implications of historic sea turtle nesting beach loss
Populations of endangered Caribbean sea turtles are far more depleted than realized because current conservation assessments do not reflect historic nesting data. We used historical sources to analyze changes in the numbers of nesting populations and population sizes for green and hawksbill turtles on all known nesting beaches in the Caribbean over the past millennium. We present the first maps...
متن کاملEstimating carrying capacity at the green turtle nesting beach of East Island, French Frigate Shoals
Many sea turtle populations are at a fraction of their historical abundance, and understanding ecological processes, under current and climate change scenarios, is critical for establishing recovery goals. In the Hawaiian Islands, the nesting population of the green turtle Chelonia mydas on East Island, French Frigate Shoals, has been recovering at a rate of 5.7% per year. Climate change models...
متن کاملPredicting species interactions from edge responses: mongoose predation on hawksbill sea turtle nests in fragmented beach habitat.
Because species respond differently to habitat boundaries and spatial overlap affects encounter rates, edge responses should be strong determinants of spatial patterns of species interactions. In the Caribbean, mongooses (Herpestes javanicus) prey on hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) eggs. Turtles nest in both open sand and vegetation patches, with a peak in nest abundance near the ...
متن کاملInfluence of waves and horseshoe crab spawning on beach morphology and sediment grain-size characteristics on a sandy estuarine beach
The effects of wave action and horseshoe crab spawning on the topography and grain-size characteristics on the foreshore of an estuarine sand beach in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, USA were evaluated using data collected over six consecutive high tides. Data were gathered inside and outside a 25 m long exclosure constructed to create a control area free of disturbance by crabs. The density of crabs...
متن کاملBeach dynamics and nest distribution of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at Grande Riviere Beach, Trinidad & Tobago.
Grande Riviere Beach in Trinidad and Tobago is an important nesting site in the Caribbean for the Critically Endangered leatherback sea turtle, Dermochelys coriacea. Community members were concerned that beach erosion and seasonal river flooding were destroying many of the nests deposited annually and thought that a hatchery was a possible solution. Over the 2001 turtle nesting season, the Inst...
